- Abstract
- This collection is best described from the introductory letters written by John Preston McConnell. This is the letter written to distinguished citizens asking for cooperation to add to this collection from J. P. McConnell. “The State Teachers College at east Radford, Virginia is establishing in the fireproof vaults of this institution the archives bearing on the State of Virginia. I am requesting a number of outstanding Virginians in various phases of the life and thought of the Commonwealth of Virginia to write, to be filed in these archives, any comment they care to make about Virginia, its history, its resources and its problems in the future for preservation for the study and the use of the present and the next generation. These opinions, comments and suggestions of the leading citizens of the Commonwealth will be of inestimable value in the future. I am, therefore, writing you to write us a communication of this character to be filed in the permanent archives of the college. Each person whom I am writing is requested to write for these archives any comment on the present, or any suggestions as to the future development and dealing with the future problems of our people. Virginia has a very great history. I believe that the greatest of all of the American States, but we have not been sufficiently careful in preserving all of its facts and ideals and ambitions that could have been preserved if we had all along through history followed something like what I have suggested. We are anxious for the signature of each person. We are requesting that each writing us, if it is convenient to do so, use his professional, official business stationary. There are no particular forms of information suggested; simply we would like for the next generation to be able to see what our people were thinking about and what were our problems and expectations for the future. If you do not have time to write fully as you would like, write us anyway what you can. We should be glad to have any statement or comment as to what steps or policies and what activities should be fostered by the present and coming generations for the present and future welfare of the Commonwealth.” This is the letter that describes the result of the cooperation letter from J. P. McConnell to the distinguished citizens. November 8, 1935 “About two years ago, I, as President of the State Teachers College, East Radford, Virginia, conceived the idea of securing letters or comments from distinguished citizens of Virginia representing all sections, sexes, colors and vocations of our people for preservation in the fireproof archives of the Virginianna room of this college. I have found some hesitancy or reticence on the part of the distinguished citizens in writing for our archives as freely as I desired. Through modesty, many of them expressed the feelings that they did not consider themselves of sufficient importance or anything you might say of sufficient significance to justify them in writing comments on the State at present or its prospect, hopes and plans for the future. Virginians have always been hesitant about writing their opinions, experiences, lives or autobiographies for the next generation as freely as do the people of some other sections in the country. There is a certain modesty about Virginians that has prevented our people from leaving behind records that would be invaluable if we had them for study and use of the present generation. Nevertheless, approximately two hundred have responded and other responses are expected. I am today filing in our Library the communications that have been received and will add to this collection others as they are received from time to time. Thanking those who have responded for their cooperation, I am John Preston McConnell, President.” This is the letter that describes how the collection was organized by J. P. McConnell. November 8, 1935 “The replies received from distinguished citizens are inclosed in twenty-one booklets or volumes, numbered from I to XXI. In each booklet or volume are included as many replies as there was sufficient space on the outside of the booklet for the name of the writer of the communication inclosed. This simplifies the whole matter of consulting at any time the contents of the series of booklets or volumes. As stated elsewhere any additional communications from distinguished citizens will be inclosed in the proper booklet.”
