Biographical/Historical Note
Miss Julia Bullard established The Radford Circle of Kings and Daughters on February 25, 1901. Their goal for this club was to bring local women together and help out in their community by improving education, environment, and culture. The club name changed frequently from “King’s Daughters and Civic Betterment Club”, to “The Woman’s Civic Club, to what it is known as “The Woman’s Club of Radford”. The club joined the State Federation in 1913 and then the General Federation the following year. The Woman’s Club had eight different departments: American Citizenship, Civics, Education, Public Welfare, Fine Arts, Legislation, Press and Publicity, and the King’s Daughters. Their club flower was the daisy, club colors were yellow and white, and their club motto was “service”. The club met in members' homes, or in various buildings on the Radford campus. In these meetings, the women sang patriotic songs, discussed and voted on volunteer plans, events, new member initiations, and frequently hosted guest speakers. The Woman’s Club of Radford donated money and time to many organizations, most notably the American Red Cross, local libraries and nursing homes.
