SCOPE AND CONTENTS

Formation of the Virginia Society for the Study of Education was a response to a call from Dr. J.P. McConnell for some sort of organization to form that would guide the educational work of the state. A meeting was held at the Murphy Hotel in Richmond, VA on Nov. 28, 1916 and the society was formed. The group consisted of representatives from State Normal Schools, Universities, Colleges, etc. Dr. McConnell was elected President. This collection consists of the Secretary's Book which gives a handwritten history of the group, and the various papers and communiques stored in the book. Several items are glued to pages in the book and these have not been disturbed but many of those items were also found stored in the book. It is unclear what years the Society was active beyond 1920.
