This collection consists of  roughly 1200 glass negatives, all of which have been scanned and uploaded as part of our digital archive collection.  The negatives are in a variety of sizes and boxed with like sizes to conserve space.

Biographical/Historical Note

William O. Trevey, a West Virginia photographer created these photographs from roughly 1890-1930.  The photographs in our collection were taken on a glass negative type camera and helped document the growth of communities such as Glen Jean and Thurmond. They also represent many communities, business', coal mining tools and coal miners in West Virginia.  Trevey was a photographer working in West Virginia communities including Glen Jean, Thurmond, Dunloop Creek and other places in the New River Gorge areas.  Trevey's subjects included studio portraits, class groups, church groups, miners, coal towns, and basically anything that caught his eye.  The glass plate negatives he used have proved resilient and still provide detailed images of the lives of his subjects.

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of roughly 1200 glass plate negatives taken by William O. Trevey between 1890-1930,  The subject matter generally represents people, buildings, and places in coal mining communities; coal tipples, tools, and coal miners; trains.  These negatives have been scanned and are available to view online in the William O. Trevey Glass Slide Collection.   The bulk of this collection consists of portraits of people and families in West Virginia coal towns and communities.  Since the photographs are all available online, this finding aid was created to cover the rare instances where access to the original glass plates are required for reproduction.
