Biographical Note
Biography supplied by John Semones, the son of Nancy Dickerson Semones:
Nancy Sowers Dickerson was born on December 12, 1908 to LC and Caroline Dickerson in Stuart, VA, the county seat of Patrick County. She was the third child and third daughter. Her parents had three more children, all sons.
Nancy's father was a "country doctor," and owned one of the first automobiles in Patrick County, where he used to make house calls. Nancy was named Miss Patrick County at the county fair circa 1924. She attended public school in Patrick County. Her father did not want his daughters to become nurses, but insisted that they become teachers. Nancy was originally sent to the State Teachers College in Farmville (now Longwood University), but decided to attend Radford State Teachers College instead after her father became ill and she wanted to be closer to home in Patrick County.
She entered Radford State Teachers College in 1924 at age 16 and finished the two year requirement to become a certified teacher when she was 18. While in Radford she joined the First Baptist Church and met Dr. L. R. Semones who had opened a dental practice in Radford in 1924.
In 1927 Nancy took a teaching job in Martinsville, VA, teaching 60 first grade students. She married L.R. Semones in 1936 and they had four children.
