Biographical/Historical Note

Clarity James became part of Radford University's Music Department in 1990, after performing all over the world in a stage career that included working with, among others, the New York City Opera, Leonard Bernstein, Gian Carlo Menotti, the Netherlands Opera, the Vienna State Opera, the Connecticut, Houston, Santa Fe, and Saint Louis operas. She is recipient of, among others, a Martha Baird Rockefeller grant, a Metropolitan Opera Association grant, the Lillian Garabedian Award, and a Corbett Foudndation Award. While teaching at Radford University, she was Director of Vocal Studies and the Opera Workshop. She retired as Professor Emeritus in 2013.

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of 56 reel-to-reel recordings and 13 scores from her personal collection. The recordings span the years Clarity James performing in recitals, opera performances, etc. The recordings span the years 1961-1973 and include 12 undated reels presumably from the same time period. The scores include 6 from Kathryn Garland Obenshain of Radford University, and 7 commercially available scores of interest.
