Biographical/Historical Note

Carl Hiram McConnell (1896-1939) was the third child of John Preston and Clara Louisa McConnell. He attended Milligan College from 1916-17; served in the military 1917-19; graduated with a Bachelors of Science from Lynchburg College in1924; graduated with a Masters and a Doctorate from University of Virginia 1930; Was a National Research Fellow and worked under Dr. Jovan Hadzi at the University Ljubljana in Yugoslavia 1930-31; As a National Research Fellow worked under Dr. Max Hartman at the Kaiser Wilhelm Instisute for Biology in Berlin, Germany; As a National Research Fellow worked under Dr. Faure Fremiet at the College de France in Paris France; Also worked under Dr. Hjalmar Brock at the University of Oslo in Oslo Norway during the summer of 1933. His teaching experience includes Lynchburg College 1919-24, Radford State Teacher's College during the summers of 1920, 1921, and 1925; University of Virginia 1927-1930; Hartwick College 1932-1937. During his military service in 1917-19, he suffered an injury to his face that would prove to plague him for the rest of his life. Much of his research was based on the Hydra and he wrote many papers on the subject throughout his career.

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of papers written by Carl Hiram McConnell, a scrapbook representing 1930-31 that he and his wife Rio McConnel spent in Yugoslavia, brief family history information, famiy correspondence, and correspondence sent by J.P. McConnell to various colleges and employment agencies throughout the United States in an attempt to find Carl McConnell a teaching job when he returned form Yugoslavia.
